Schools Offering Rowing

Atlantic Coast

By Robert Kennedy, About.com

Several dozen private schools along the Atlantic coast offer rowing as a sport. Many have been doing it for years and compete regionally and nationally in the spring and fall regattas.

Baylor School, Chattanooga, TN

"Baylor fields nationally recognized varsity and novice teams in both girls and boys crew. Varsity, Junior Varsity, and Novice teams are trained in the program. Our campus is located on the Tennessee River in a picturesque and convenient location for practice and regattas (the USA Women's eight came here to practice for the '96 Olympics) - indeed, students often watch the finishes of exciting races just outside our classrooms."

Belen Jesuit Prep, Miami, FL

"The Wolverine Crew was started in the Fall of 2000 thanks to a Belen Senior who had trained the prior summer at the American Barge Club, while thinking how great it would be to have a rowing team at Belen. Convinced that rowing, always considered the sport for the academically inclined and the prestige sport of the Ivy League schools, would be a perfect fit for Belen, a school known for student excellence in both academics and athletics, Alex Echevarria (Class of 2001) talked his father into supporting his dream of bringing Crew to Belen. Believing that additional college opportunities would result for Belen students that participated in Crew, Alex Echevarria, Sr. agreed to help."

Berkeley Preparatory School, Tampa, FL

"Founded in 1960, Berkeley Preparatory School is a PreK - Grade 12 co-educational independent day school located in Tampa, Florida. Berkeley educates the whole child by nurturing students' intellectual, emotional, spiritual and physical development so they may attain their highest potential. Our philosophy encompasses a balanced curriculum of academics and arts, clubs and activities, competitive sports and community service. An emphasis on academic excellence combined with a spirit of social responsibility engenders in students a newfound confidence and shared sense of purpose. Students exchange ideas, study virtues and explore ethics as they define their attitudes and values."

Episcopal High School, Jacksonville, FL

"Episcopal High School exists to provide a superior college-preparatory education for students in grades six through twelve within a nurturing Christian atmosphere. The School offers not only an ongoing and serious pursuit of excellence but also a group of people who genuinely care for and about each other."

Frederica Academy, St. Simon's Island, GA

"In the classroom, all students from 4-18 years of age are challenged academically, skills are developed and curiosity is cultivated. Preparation for college is thorough as evidenced by our accomplished and confident students, all of whom attend very fine universities and colleges across the country."

Girls Preparatory School, Chattanooga, TN

"The GPS rowing program provides an opportunity for girls in grades 9-12 to participate in the sport at a competitive level. Most of the rowers join the team without previous rowing experience, and any girl in grades 9-12 is welcome to participate. Over the last several years, the varsity rowing team has consistently been competitive at the national level. Last year at Nationals, the Lightweight 8 placed 5th overall and was the top high school team in their event. The Varsity 8 placed 13th at Nationals and finished off the season as the 3rd highest high school team in the nation. Off the water, the GPS rowing team is ranked as Tennessee's Best Scholastic Team."
