Visit Schools on Your Short List

There is no substitute for visiting each school on your short list. You simply have to do it. Sending your daughter for an overnight is fine, but you need to inspect each campus personally and meet with the admissions staff yourself. Evaluating schools takes time and energy. Make sure you allow yourself time for this part of the school selection process. If at all possible, try to arrange visits in the fall, but definitely before Thanksgiving.

Campus Appearance

Is it tidy and well cared for or has the grounds crew taken a permanent vacation due to lack of funds? Even the most distinguished campuses can look worn and tatty without proper maintenance. The care of grounds and buildings indicates an appreciation of the past and a concern for the future.

Facilities

Make sure you inspect the Media Center. (You and I used to call this a library). Is it state of the art with wireless Internet access? Does it have comfortable areas for students to gather and work?
Ask to see all the facilities which matter to you. If your daughter rides, then the equestrian facility will be high on your list. If your son plays hockey, check out the indoor rink. And so on.

Current Students

Always try to visit when school is in session.

  • How do the current students behave?
  • If it is a residential school, are there lots of day students?
  • Are day students allowed to drive to school?
  • If there is a dress code, is it enforced?
You know your own personal standards better than anyone. Trust your instincts and judgment. If you don't like what you see, move on.

Faculty and Staff

Teaching styles vary from school to school. Make sure that what is being taught and how it is being taught suits you.

  • Are the teachers engaged?
  • Are they aloof? Friendly? Too friendly?
Happy teachers stand out. Ask to observe a class. Are you comfortable with the teaching methods and style?
