"The American College of Sofia, which celebrated its 140th Anniversary in the 2000-1 school year, is the oldest American educational institution outside the United States. It traces its roots directly to a school for boys opened in Philippolis by American missionaries for the 1860-61 school year."

"The Anglo-American School was founded in 1967 under the sponsorship of the American and British embassies to provide English language education for the dependent children of their personnel.
