Technology: Ignore at Your Peril!
Dateline: 04/06/98The recent statement in the news a few weeks ago that starting salaries this year for liberal arts graduates are in the high 20's - low 30's might encourage the traditionalists among us. Stay the course, old boy! Bring on the Sartre, the Plato! Show me your Milton, your Homer and your Whitehead! Down with those infernal computers! Human intelligence is what matters!
Wait a minute! The demand for technology experts is so great that the Immigration Service is considering a special class of visa just for foreigners possessing training and certification in those highly specialized technologies!
Private schools have long been in the vanguard of integrating technology with education. Many schools now expect students to own a laptop. Campuses are wired for Internet and intranets.
Where is it going? How do we balance the needs of technology and traditional education? How do we determine how much of our school's budget should be spent on technology? Is it money well-spent?
