Follow these simple steps to find employment opportunities in private schools!
Difficulty: Hard
Time Required: 45 minutes
Here's How:
- Start the job search process early. You need to begin finding a job before Thanksgiving in order to secure employment for the following fall.
- Think clearly about what you want. Are you looking for more money? Better benefits? More prestige? Less teaching time? More administrative duties?
- Think objectively about what you offer. Ask a trusted adviser to help you with this part of the job search process.
- Observe deadlines! Prove that you are organized and capable of meeting important deadlines.
- Keep your resume current, short and job specific. There is a difference between a resume and a curriculum vitae. Be sure to observe that distinction.
- Include only relevant details in your resume. You must position yourself so that your resume matches the new job's requirements.
- Make yourself appealing and likable! Finding a new job is all about selling yourself to a likely prospect. The easiest way to sell yourself is to ask questions and listen carefully to the answers.
- Network constantly. Network with colleagues, friends, family and affinity groups. Let them know that you are looking for a new position.
- E-mail makes networking easy! Put out feelers electronically. Keep in touch regularly.
- Remember people and they will remember you! A kind word, remembering birthdays and anniversaries - random acts of kindness make your memorable.
- Be reasonable and flexible. You are not going to get everything you are looking for. Be prepared to compromise.
- Have reasonable salary expectations. If you expect more, then you must offer more. Demonstrate the value you bring to the new organization.
- Show your willingness to undertake extra duties. Everybody approeciates a positive, 'can do' attitude.
- Search job listings which are aimed specifically at the private school sector.
Tips:
- Register with an employment agency. Some schools only hire through agencies.
- Practice your interviewing skills. Do some role playing!
- Express your enthusiasm for the position. Show it too!
