Let's Celebrate Our Diversity!

Wednesday April 26, 2006
Today is the Gay, Lesbian, Straight Education Network's 10th National Day of Silence®. Teaching your community to be tolerant and sensitive is a tough job. Popular culture delights in putting down those who are perceived as weak or different. We no longer debate issues and ideas with decorum. Like 'guests' on the Jerry Springer Show we bludgeon our opponents with words. We yell and interrupt. So it comes as no surprise that impressionable young people copy what they see us adults doing.

Tolerance and acceptance of diversity go a long way towards eliminating teasing, bullying and harrassment. The result is a learning community in which children and adults will feel safe and supported. A safe, vigilant school community will head off sinister plots hatched by abused and misunderstood young people. A safe, tolerant school community will celebrate each person's diversity.
