Should You Pay To Dispose Of Your Old Computers?

From Robert Kennedy, About.com Guide   January 18, 2006

A member of the private school listserv ISED-L recently asked for ideas for disposing of the sixty computers and monitors her school was replacing. Seems the company supplying the new systems was going to charge $50 a unit to dispose of the old systems. That got me thinking about responsible ways of dealing with the problem of getting rid of old electronics.
Most municipalities have facilities where you can take computers and monitors and dispose of them safely. I, however, feel strongly that older PC's which have Intel P-III or Athlon processors can be recycled by donating them to a local computer literacy program. We private school folks are very well blessed with the latest technologies, and that is wonderful. But a P-III with 256mb of RAM will run most Windows operating systems and the most common applications fairly well. So, how about it, folks? Sprinkle some love around the community when it comes time to replace those aging and well-used systems. A lot of people will be very grateful you did.
