Readers Respond: Does The Montessori Approach Work?

By , About.com Guide

Maria Montessori was an Italian doctor who devoted herself to educating the children of Rome's ghettos. She became famous for her visionary methods and founded an educational movement which is enormously popular just about everywhere in the world. Dr. Montessori was an early advocate of what has become known as the multiple intelligences theory. It posits that children learn using intelligences other than reading and writing. Children learn by a process of discovery rather than being taught by rote. Share Your Thoughts

Teachers are available

Looking at East Africa, in Uganda there are very good Montessori teachers that can offer the best. They have diplomas. There are no degrees because in Africa there are no Montessori teacher Training Schools that offer degrees. Nevertheless Uganda has very good Montessori teachers trained by Caroline Rusita.

Accepted Philospohy

Her methods may have been visionary at one time, but now I think it's pretty well accepted that kids - everyone, really - learn better when all of their senses are stimulated. Hopefully, public schools all over the world will catch up with her!

Restrictions on Creative Play

I had two children go through Montessori. For my son, it was a great match. He's a bit of a type "A" personality and he really flourished with the rules of Montessori and the approach to Montessori "work." My daughter didn't do as well with all the Montessori rules. The Montessori "work" needs to be done in a specific way, and she often wanted to take the work and use it in different, creative ways. But if blocks are for counting and fractions, they can't be used for building towers. Dolls used for showing what different types of workers wear can't be used in a dollhouse. She found the rules frustrating, and she had a much better experience when she moved to public universal Pre-K.

But Where Are the Good Teachers?

I am all for the Montessori philosophy. But an evolved pedagogy requires a good teacher to implement it. That is where the trouble lies. There are not too many good teachers available. Though the usual, brain-numbing education system is far below optimal, it is at least scalable.
