Proctor Academy was established in 1848. It existed under several different names over the years until John Proctor, who invented the threaded wood screw, returned to Andover to rejuvenate the town and its school. Proctor has always been tied to its surroundings. Its 3,000 acre campus is a State of New Hampshire tree farm. The school is rather environmentally conscious in many old-fashioned and cutting edge ways and very proud of being green.

Academics:

Proctor offers 10 AP courses. But it is best known for its experiential programs. That started with a wilderness program and has grown to a series of programs in France, Spain, Costa Rica and sailing on the North Atlantic (Ocean Classroom).

Facilities:

Located in the small town of Andover, New Hampshire. Proctor Academy is set on 3,000 pristine acres which include a private ski area.

Finances:

The school has an endowment of $31 million and offers financial aid to about 26% of its students.

Commentary:

My alma mater, Westmount High in Montreal, used to play an annual football game against Proctor. It is gratifying to see this little school on the cutting edge of so many exciting programs. The location, the dedicated faculty, the experiential programs at home and abroad - these are all reasons, I'm sure, why this school is over-enrolled for the 2009-2010 academic year. There are many other reasons too why you should put this boarding school on your list.
