A Brief History:
Georgetown Preparatory School is an offshoot of Georgetown College which Father John Carroll founded in 1789. The school separated from the college in the 1890's and moved to its suburban Bethesda location in 1919. Georgetown Preparatory School is the only Jesuit boarding school in the U.S. It is also the oldest all boys boarding school.
The Required Program of Study
at Georgetown Prep is rigorous. The school also offers 24 AP courses. 88% of its faculty hold advanced degrees.
The school offers academic courses in the following departments:
The Hanley Center for Athletic Excellence is the jewel in Georgetown Prep's athletic crown. With a pool, indoor track, courts and much more it affords the athletic facilities which a top prep school needs. The school also has a golf course.
A major construction project currently underway will revamp the old field house into an ultra-modern learning center.
Georgetown Prep has a small endowment of $80 million. Notwithstanding that, the school managed to award $1.7 million in financial aid for academic year 2008-2009.
Georgetown Prep graduates are well-prepared to attend fine colleges and universities. Recent graduates have gone to Harvard, Georgetown, Stanford, the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Virginia.
70% of Georgetown Preparatory School's students are Roman Catholic. The Jesuits are renowned for their academic excellence. You can be assured that your son will receive a rigorous academic education at Georgetown Prep.
While the school has boarders, the reality is that Georgetown Prep is a day school which happens to have some boarding students. On the other hand, it is an excellent day school. So if you live in the Bethesda area and want your son to have a solid Catholic education, you need to investigate the school thoroughly.
