December's tasks in the time line for choosing a school have to be accomplished around another major holiday. Christmas means that school admissions offices are closed for at least two weeks making visits and communications somewhat difficult.

1. Take SSAT/ISEE tests.

The last SSAT test date before most January application deadlines is the second Saturday in December. You will have a bit flexibility if the school or schools to which you are applying have rolling admissions.

2. Complete applications.

Try to complete your application file a week or so before the stated deadline. Completing your application file means getting those teacher recommendations and transcripts submitted on time. All testing and interview requirements must also be completed.
