Does Chat conjure up visions of time wasting, pointless
conversations and worse? It shouldn't! Chat can be a very useful
tool for educators as it enlivens your lessons by connecting you and your
students across great distances immediately. Let's look at some of
the possibilities. I am sure that you can think up many more uses!
Chat is ideal for joint projects with other schools around the world. A few years ago, for instance, my eighth grade Latin class did a mythology project with a school in New Zealand via e-mail. Chat gives that sort of project immediacy and excitement as the two classes can log on and begin to exchange answers online. Students love chat, readily retain the information exchanged - no matter how trivial - and will find many more uses for it than you and I can possibly imagine! Exchange and Discussion
