Music Teachers' Resources
| I cannot believe that I have not written a feature about
music in the two years that I have been About.com's Private Schools
Guide! But there it is! I spent thirty-five productive, happy years as
a church musician training hundreds of choristers young and old, performing
dozens of public recitals on organ, harpsichord and piano, and composing
over forty works, some of which even managed to get published. These days,
I do my musical thing 'on the air', having become a volunteer announcer
for our local classical music station, WCPE.
So with Saint Cecilia as my guide, let us proceed!
Some of the wealthier prep schools have music facilities which are better than those at many colleges and universities. So it is not surprising to find fine programs at places like Woodberry Forest School, Saint George's School, Punahou School and Choate Rosemary Hall to cite four examples. Wind, string and choral ensembles abound. Solo performances are warmly encouraged and supported. Opportunities to study with talented faculty are the norm. There are those wags who will try to claim that the sports facilities at private schools far outclass the performing arts facilities. That may well have been true even as recently as the 1970's. The 1980's and 1990's, however, have seen a substantial redressing of the imbalance, so much so that I am quite convinced that sports and the arts share equal footing at most institutions. I have created a list of links for private school music teachers. I hope that you will find these useful. They can be found at Teaching Resources: Music. Please do let me know of any of your favorites which I may have omitted inadvertently. I will keep them updated for you. Be sure to visit the Private Schools Forum before you leave! We need to hear from you! Did you sign up for your copy of the Private Schools Newsletter? It's a weekly, offering new links and much more of interest to parents, teachers, administrators and students! Read it online too. Rob |
