Choose a Private School

By Robert Kennedy, About.com

Follow these simple steps to make choosing a private school for your child less of an ordeal!
Difficulty: Average
Time Required: 12-18 months

Here's How:

  1. Begin by discussing your child's needs. Are they purely academic? Social? Athletic? Artistic? Special needs?
  2. Set out your expectations. What is it you want the school to achieve?
  3. Make sure you clearly understand the rationale for private education! It's quite different from public education.
  4. Decide on the location of the school - close by or at a distance.
  5. Choose between day or boarding school.
  6. Scan the listings in U.S. Schools for suitable schools in the location you have chosen.
  7. Write or email the schools for catalogs, videos and applications.
  8. Hire an educational consultant to help you refine the choices to 3-5 schools.
  9. Arrange visits and interviews at the schools.
  10. Visit the schools which you have identified as suitable.
  11. Complete the applications.
  12. Arrange return visits as necessary to schools which have offered a place.
  13. Return acceptance form with deposit check.

Tips:

  1. Begin the search process in April for the following January application submission.
  2. Organize your search with files!
  3. Mark deadlines and appointments on a calendar!
