Private school students can broaden their horizons by studying for a semester at another school. Semester away programs are open usually to juniors (and some sophomores) who are in good academic standing at their schools. Well-known programs such as the Mountain School of Milton Academy in Vermont, the Island School of the Bahamas (started with support from the Lawrenceville School), and the Chewonki Semester School in Maine, use a hands-on approach to teach students about the environment and sustainable living. Students at these schools SCUBA dive, hike, work on organic farms, and carry out chores while handling a rigorous academic program. The experiences teach students skills that are applicable far beyond the classroom. Read more about semester away programs for private school students.
