Galveston Update

Thursday January 8, 2009
Hurricane Ike devastated Galveston Island last September. The other day Veronica left a comment about conditions in the Catholic schools there. I reprint her update in its entirety. If anybody has news about the other schools on the island, please leave a comment.

Robert, I’m happy to update you on the status of Galveston Catholic School. The building received 6-15″ of flood water, and the school was closed for four weeks while remediation teams cleared the debris, replaced sheet rock and wood, cleaned every surface and treated for mold. Students were encouraged to attend any area Catholic school, and most attended Our Lady of Fatima School in nearby Texas City.

GCS was one of the first Galveston schools to reopen, on October 13; O’Connell was the first. Trinity and a reconfigured GISD opened one week later. Some students did not return; enrollment, and therefore, revenue, is down.

Fortunately we received news that we have been awarded a grant, and the Cardinal has promised us that there will be Catholic education on the island. We just don’t know what that will look like. Thank you for providing this opportunity to inform you.
