Choosing A School For The President Elect's Daughters

Saturday November 8, 2008
I don't envy Michelle Obama in the least as she sets out to find a school for her two daughters. Some commentators will champion the idea of sending Malia and Sasha to public school. But, let's be honest here. How on earth could the Secret Service protect the girls in a public school setting? That's the main reason the girls will probably go to private school in January. Once those children are behind the gates of whatever private school they attend in Washington, the Secret Service will be able to keep a close eye on things in a controlled environment. Security is the biggest consideration Michelle Obama will have to grapple with.

The other consideration is academics. Sasha and Malia already attend one of the top prep schools in this country. Its graduates go to the best colleges and universities in the world. Michelle and Barack Obama value education. They worked hard for their degrees. They are successful people. They will want only the best for their daughters.

What schools would I suggest that Mrs. Obama look at? My short list would include Sidwell Friends, the National Cathedral School and Georgetown Day School. Tomorrow I will explain why these schools might fit the bill for the President's daughters. In the meantime have a look at all the private schools in the Washington, DC area and let us know which one you think the First Daughters should attend.

Without doubt, the BEST girl school in the greater Georgetown area is the fabulous Maderia School, which happens to be in McLean, VA…not DC. Unfortunately, it is only a high school just like Episcopal in Alexandria, VA which is where Quin Roosevelt & McCain went. EHS is coed nowadays. I’m not familiar w/ Georgetown Day b/c I’m not a native of Georgetown. Sidwell is great [Quaker schools always rule!], as is National Cathedral where Jesse Jackson Jr. went (St. Albans is its all-boy coordinate) and is also where Al & Tipper Gore sent their daughter. I’d probably choose “Cathedral” if I had young gals. Does anyone know where Caroline Kennedy was sent?
