The Gap Year(s)

Sunday September 7, 2008
My brother and I were having our usual Saturday chat. I asked about his youngest son who I thought was heading back for third year at college. I was surprised to hear that my nephew is taking a year or two off. Apparently he needs to time to 'find' himself and decide what he really wants to do, and, of course, wants to make some money. And it seems that my nephew is not alone. Increasing numbers of young people take a hiatus from their college work.

Suddenly I felt really old! My generation could hardly wait to graduate with those essential college degrees and begin our careers. Is the currency of a college degree somehow devalued? Has college education just gotten too expensive? I'd love to hear your thoughts on the subject. Leave a post in the Private Schools Forum if you don't mind. Oh, and my nephew and his two older brothers all got great high school educations at Upper Canada College.
