Look At How The School Uses Technology
Wednesday April 16, 2008
Some schools are way ahead of the pack when it comes to implementing technology in the classroom. Their campuses are wireless. Tablet PC's can be found everywhere including the faculty lounge. Everything pedagogical is online. Others are still struggling with hardware and software and teacher resistance to using computers in the first place. Put technology near the top of your list of things to check out when you visit a school!

I teach in an independent school that has a wireless campus, laptop labs for student use, smart boards, etc. I use my computer in class constantly to find information as questions arise in class, or help kids find information. However, I would NOT put technology at the top of my list in evaluating a school for my child. Just one more variable in the equation. I want my child to have thinking teachers, meaningful assignments, not just “hands-on” but up to the elbows investigations, and classmates who are engaged in questioning and learning. Technology, as essential as it is in our daily life, can not alone offer these.
