Learning Disabilities

Saturday February 9, 2008
I remember well the day my headmistress informed me that I would be having a student with ADD in my class. I literally did not know what to do. And I had little choice in the matter. No, I was not being cold or hard-hearted. I simply did not have the requisite training to teach an ADD student.

I had lived in Litchfield County, Connecticut where the Forman School is located. One of the leaders in special needs education Forman has superb, highly skilled faculty. I knew several of these professionals who had certification in all kinds of learning disorders. They knew how to remediate even the most severe conditions. When I thought about their vast experience and my total lack of it, I knew how ill-equipped I was to teach the student my headmistress insisted I 'do something with'.

Where am I going with this? Simply put, if you are told that your child has ADD or dyslexia, don't deny it. Do something about it. Go to the experts and seek counsel. Ensure that your child gets the expert instruction she deserves in a school setting which will support and encourage her.
