Where Girls Come First

Thursday October 26, 2006
Ilana DeBare has written an excellent chronicle of girls' schools, both private and public. The subtitle says it all: The Rise, Fall, and Surprising Revival of Girls' Schools. The book also charts the gestation of Julia Morgan School in Oakland, California, which DeBare helped found. The result is that you are able to appreciate the birth of this new girls' school against the backdrop of 150 years or so of history. Skilful writer that she is, DeBare convincingly validates single sex education as a relevant educational modality for the 21st century. In sum, this is a keeper.

With the Federal Government's recent announcement about single sex schools being legal, Ilana's story shows just how far ahead of the curve private schools have been. Read her book! be inspired! Why not start your own school?
