Using Cell Phones in School
The Mayor is being unreasonable in my opinion. After 9/11 any parent in New York or anywhere else wants to stay connected with his children. That's perfectly understandable and reasonable. My advice to all concerned is to sit down and work out a protocol we can all live with. Parental peace of mind and children's safety are the paramount issues.
While the debate about cell phone use continues in New York, a British shop keeper has come up with a ring tone which he claims adults cannot hear. It is pitched in the same range as a dog whistle. Young people can hear the tone. Anybody over 30 has a tough time hearing those high frequencies as our ability to hear high frequencies diminishes as we get older. Needless to say, teens think this is the best invention since sliced bread.
Stay tuned. Cell phones are here to stay. We just have to figure out how to integrate them into our academic lives a bit more efficiently.
