Are French Schools Elitist?

"Are private schools elitist?" is a question I have been asked more times than I can remember. Most American private schools aren't elitist. But what about French schools, public schools at that? According to New York Times writer Craig S. Smith, they are. Well, at least now we know where the French mandarins and political leaders come from. Smith's article made my populist skin crawl.
