No More Jokes about Governor Dummer

Tuesday December 6, 2005
Governor Dummer Academy in Boston enjoys the distinction of being one of the oldest private schools in America. It was founded in 1763. Regrettably the school's name has long been the butt of jokes casting aspersions, as it does, on the intelligence of its students. But that will change next July when the Academy becomes known simply as The Governor's Academy.
Needless to say, the board of trustees has ruffled a few alumni feathers with its action. In a way it's sad that our changing language and popular expressions have eclipsed the historical value of a colonial founder's name and legacy.
