Teacher Shortage? Not Exactly!
Sunday October 30, 2005
How can there be a teacher shortage if education schools are turning out 100,000 new teachers annually and only 50,000 are actually being hired? Confused? So was I until I read Dr. Emily Feistritzer's testimony before Congress entitled Alternative Routes To Teaching. In her paper I learned that the problem is not a numbers issue after all. There are plenty of people who want to teach. Problem is that there has been a dramatic shift away from traditional preparation at the undergraduate level to preparing mature adults who want to teach after they have done something else in life. Changing the education bureacracy isn't easy, it seems.
